Māori students across all health disciplines are invited to apply for the latest round of Hauora Māori Scholarships that aim to help grow the Māori health workforce.
Applications opened on February 14 for more than 500 scholarships that are open to Māori undergraduate students in medicine (100), dentistry (10), nursing (155), pharmacy (10), midwifery (25), physiotherapy (20) and health management (10) as well as to dietitians (5), community health workers (55) and a variety of other health-related degrees (75) like occupational therapy and radiography. A further 55 scholarships are available for Māori students studying towards a health-related postgraduate qualification.
Associate Minister of Health Jenny Salesa said the scholarships were a great opportunity for students and health care workers and offered them support to help them achieve and excel in their chosen health career.
She also said enhancing and encouraging Māori representation in the health workforce is hugely important so that the system responds effectively to the needs of Māori.
Māori make up about 15 per cent of the New Zealand population. The proportion of health professionals identifying as Māori in recent years were midwifery (9% in 2014), medicine (3.2% in 2014), dentistry (2.5% in 2011) and nursing (7% in 2015)
The Hauora Māori Scholarships also includes three special award categories: the Excellence Awards, the John McLeod Award and Te Apa Māreikura Award. The scholarships and awards range in value from $1000 to $10,000 each.
To be eligible for a Hauora Māori Scholarship, applicants must be a student enrolled and attending a university, polytechnic, wānanga or private training establishment based in New Zealand and have whakapapa and/or cultural links with Te Ao Māori or Māori communities.
They must demonstrate a commitment to and/or competence in Māori health and wellbeing and be studying a health or disability-related, NZQA accredited course.
