New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC)  is now offering healthcare qualifications that will help provide solid pathways into jobs in the aged care, community support, disability and other healthcare sectors as well as professional development opportunities for healthcare assistants.

NZTC will be offering the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3) in March and a New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Support) (Level 4) in July.  These Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications will equip students with the skills for a job in a range of care sectors as well as pave the way for higher level study opportunities.

The two qualifications are approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and feature a unique blend of theoretical and practical study that ensures students put their learning into practice.

Until recently, NZTC has focused on early childhood teacher education but for the first time in 35 years is looking to expand into the health and wellbeing sector.

NZTC chief executive Selena Fox says the move has been prompted by the growing demand for educated, respectful healthcare assistants in the community, aged care residential facilities and hospitals.

“After years of research and learning from the health and wellbeing community, NZTC is honoured to now step in and support accessible, flexible, practical qualifications,” she says. “The college is looking forward to welcoming students who have a heart to help others.”

Fox says they’ve spent a lot of time with the relevant sectors during the development of the qualifications, listening to what they need and want.

NZTC has established systems which provide flexibility with online learning options, empowering students to balance their study with their work and life commitments. They will create online communities so that students can support each other with their learning.

Fox says she is thrilled with the calibre of the teaching staff for the new qualifications. The college has also enlisted academic, pastoral, IT and face-to-face support to help all students, regardless of age, ethnicity, location and level of tech ability.
