Paul Jones beams from ear to ear as he talked about his home, Malyon House. As one of the residents who has been there the longest, he couldn’t be prouder that the Mount Maunganui rest home has won an Aged Advisor People’s Choice Award for the second year running.
“I don’t want to go anywhere else,” he says, “The atmosphere is so good. And it’s nice and clean – it smells clean.”
Manager Amy Munro stage-whispers that she’ll slip him $20 later and he lights up at the joke.
There are no bribes necessary in this case, however, with the latest award evidence that plenty of others agree with Paul.
For the second year running, Malyon House has won best medium-large aged care facility in the North Island in the 2018 People’s Choice Awards for Best Retirement Villages and Care Facilities.
Only 24 Finalists and Winners were awarded after receiving over 2500 in-depth reviews and ratings on seven categories ranging from ‘Enjoyable Food’ to ‘Indoor Entertainment’. The reviews cover more than 535 retirement villages and aged care facilities from throughout New Zealand.
Munro says the award is a real credit to their team. Malyon House has been family-owned for 22 years and the team feels that this helps to give the home a real family atmosphere. Staff-to-resident ratios are higher and turnover is lower than the average facility.
Aged Advisor founder Nigel Matthews says the awards have been well received.
This morning he awarded the Best Nationwide Group Provider award to Ryman Healthcare. It is the first time this category has been awarded.
Ryman spokesperson David King says the company is delighted to receive it.
“The award is the result of a lot of hard work by all of our amazing staff.”
Nigel Matthews believes initial concerns around Aged Advisor have been allayed, with the site seeing continued growth in the number of reviews. When the site was introduced over three years ago there was some fear of it becoming a ‘Trip Advisor for rest homes’. However Matthews says 96 per cent of the reviews give 3, 4 and 5-star ratings and the site attracts “considered comments from a wiser audience”.
“Providers are finally realising that a review site is now a reality for their sector – and that encouraging or constructive feedback can be extremely beneficial – rather than the fear of ‘what if someone says something negative’. People want to know the real stories – and those facilities doing a great job will welcome the opportunity for their residents to share their stories,” says Matthews.
