The Breast Cancer Foundation of New Zealand has launched a new app called ‘Pre-Check’, designed to empower women to take charge of their own breast health from home.
The app, available on both the App Store for iPhone and Google Play for Android, offers visual, tactile and audible cues to search for breast cancer.
Following a step-by-step guide, the app also includes a ‘Knowing Your Normal’ for women to get to know their own breasts. This is an easy, interactive and for most women – less stressful than seeing a general practitioner for any breast worries.
Providing extensive detail about support, what to look for, where to go if you do indeed find a lump or have any further worries about your breasts – the app also includes an option for regular push notifications on your phone, reminding you to ‘push, look and check’.
The ‘Pre-Check’ app comes at an important time. BreastScreen Aotearoa has stopped offering mammograms during the COVID-19 pandemic, although they will be rescheduling any pre-booked appointments. The ‘Pre-Check’ app allows for peace of mind, a way to learn to check your own breasts, and offers a tech option for younger women who may not be eligible for mammograms.
