From Wednesday 1 April 2020, all children aged 6 months to 35 months will be able to receive the flu vaccine.
The Flu Immunisation Programme has been altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic; however, many people are still eligible for a free vaccine. Usually New Zealand would begin on 1 April for all eligible patients, in order to remain effective during the winter season.
Funded patients have been able to receive a flu vaccine since 18 March 2020 from their local general practice or pharmacy. Those who are eligible include sufferers of chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes and HIV, alongside pregnant women and anyone over 65 years old.
For those who are not eligible for funding, the Ministry of Health has asked general practices and pharmacies to defer vaccinations until Monday 13 April 2020. This is in order to allow more time and allocate more resources to eligible patients and healthcare workers
